Every morning I get in the elevator. Usually I ride alone, but sometimes someone else gets on. It seems to be a rule in our building that if you are the first person on, you press the buttons for everyone, unless you happen to step to the side or back, in which case people give you ”the look”. I don’t know what that’s all about.
So, today I got on the elevator. I go to five. A guy gets on and he wants the fourth floor. I press the button. Then another guy gets on, and he wants the third floor. I press the button.
We stop at the third floor, that guy gets off. We stop at the fourth floor, and the guy says, “Have a wonderful day!”, smiles at me, and he gets off. I call after him, “You too!” As the doors shut, I realized and I continue my ascent to the fifth floor, I thought to myself:
Those guys who are paid to press the buttons and ride the elevators up and down all day long must have the most boring job in the world!*
*And here you thought this would be an exciting post.
Oh My God!!! And then what happened!!???!! Did your finger cramp?? Did anyone drop a dollar or leave behind a brief case?? Did the police meet you later and ask about the men???
I NEED TO KNOW!!!!
Elevators are funny things…
I’ve always worked in building with elevators and I have never heard of such a rule. Weird.
MetalMom - I went to my desk where I engaged in the fascinating world of setting up meetings and travel.
Dutchy - They are. Everyone always faces the doors too. One day, I think I’ll look at the back wall.
Teri - It’s not really a rule so much as an expectation. The funny thing is each floor is a different company.
They pay me enough and I’ll stand there and press buttons.
I always hate the people who stand in front of the buttons and don’t push them but refuse to move for you to do it. Makes me feel like a jerk having to push them aside to jam my finger into my required floor button.
Slick - It would have to be really good pay.
VP - I totally agree with you, but I just ask them to press my number. LOL
