Normally I don’t talk about blogging when I play World of Warcraft, and I don’t talk about World of Warcraft on my blogs. In a way, it is two separate lives. But, the other day I was talking with my WoW friends, K.
K and I were talking about how we use to love Back to the Future, and we both thought it was a great movie. (And how we both own the box set.) It kind of started when we were quoting lines from the movie. He told me of his fascination with DeLorean’s, and I said, “Oh, I have a picture of one on my old blog!” This turned to the conversation of blogging, something he doesn’t do. And finally, he asked me “What is your blog about?” And, of course, since we determined I am a narcissist, I said, “Me!!” Then I had to explain that some people write about themselves, some people write about politics, some people write bullshit, some people write for business, etc, etc. It actually was a lot harder to explain why I blog then I thought it would be. I don’t think I really portrayed it right.
How would you explain blogging to a non-blogger?
Good question. It’s not all that easy to explain. I’d probably say pretty much what you did.
I think you did fine… assuming that the person knew what a blog was!
It’s the 21st century version of “Pen-pals”…
I think most casual bloggers have trouble categorizing their blogs because we just talk about ourselves, or pop culture, or whatever.
That said, my blog is:
“The World with Jake Glasses On.”
I have a hard time with that, too. Especially if they have NO idea what the hell a blog is.
You hit the nail on the head for me Lynda…
Total bullshit
I think for me it is more of a on line journal. I write about what interests me or what I am thinking about at the time. But, you are right the bottom line is it is all about me!
Chuck - Thanks! I was hoping someone else would say that! LOL
Finn - I was under the impression that he did, he just didn’t know what one would write to a blog.
Buffalodickdy - True! Considering how much my extended family reads my blog. Or so I am told.
Jacob - I like the glasses analogy. It doesn’t sound so narcissistic.
Shelli - Fortunately, I didn’t have to explain what a blog was. haha.
Slick - I was thinking of you when I typed that too!
Poody - I’m glad I am not the only one!
Some people..yeah, the just don’t get it.
I guess we are a breed apart. Be proud!
You can’t. People really just don’t get it until they live it.
The way I explain it to DH, who refuses to understand them, claims they’re not his thing and doesn’t even appreciate a good cheezburger or hotdog post.
“It’s like an online journal, diary, extended message board… you post whatever grabbed your attention at any given moment and sometimes other people identify with that, sometimes not. You really should lighten up and be more fun.”
I started my blog as a way to keep in touch with people back home when we moved to Vegas. And then I discovered I liked talking about myself and sharing things that interest me. So when people ask me what my blog is about I say that it is a place for me to get all the things out of my head and onto the screen. And when they ask why I would want to share all that with the entire world I reply I am just so darn interesting I can’t keep them away.
I am a total narcisist. I cant spell it but I am one
Also, I am damn nosy, I really enjoy reading about what everyone else in the world is doing, seeing pictures of their lives. Its like approved snooping kinda for me.
I don’t share it with many people who DON’T blog, but when I have explained it, I just say….it’s a diary with feedback.
Mr. Fab - Oh, I am proud!
*pixie* - There is probably some truth to that.
Shades - I do like the social connection.
VP - I think I use it to a certain extent to clear my head as well. The few times I have gone over old entries, I will be amazed at what I forgotten!
Mel - Are you say blogs are like your tabloids?
Special K - I tend to be the same way, though, I know a lot of family reads my blog.
