Sleepy Dogs Need A Place to Lie
April 29, 2008 by Lynda

“We got something for Nikki,” I said in a sing-song voice. Nikki’s body wiggled as she knew that voice meant the large package I was opening was for her. Just an hour before, Dan and I had been at Target, and as we passed the dog beds, we found one we liked. I had been wanting to get her a dog bed for a while, to replace the tired, old comforter she had been sleeping on.
Nikki sniffed at the package as I opened it. I took it out, unfolded her new bed. Dan looks at me and says, “I think it is upside down.” I told him I didn’t think so. Nikki looks to me and Dan like, “How am I suppose to eat this?” We coax her onto the bed. Her paw sinks into the filler and we coax her to lie down. Then I looked at the side of the bed, and see the brand is upside-down. “Oh, I think you are right. The bed is upside down.”
Fast forward to later in the evening. I got into our room and flip the dog bed. Nikki is on the couch, and I tell her it is time for night night. Dan had turned in already. She looks at me as if she is wondering if she can sleep on her new bed again. I coax her onto it. She lays down, seeming a bit unsure. When we wake up in the morning though, she is snuggled into her new bed. I tell her it is time to go out, and she looks at me as if to say, “You mean I have to get up?” After she is back in, she comes into the bedroom, and looks to us, then the bed, almost as if to say, “If you let me sleep there, I promise I will stay there all day. You are going to let me sleep on it again, right?”
In a few days, she won’t even question it anymore.
Aw she likes it. Mine could care less — they want the Tempurpedic!
Aren’t they funny little creatures. I wonder if we are totally wrong about their thoughts, sometimes. They probably laugh and laugh at us.
Aww that is so cute! I wish my cats slept in a bed left out for them instead of parading across my face all night.
oh man, would you look at the eyes on that dog??!!! and she is so happy with her bed!!!
I bought both of my Labs beds…once…. my girl loved it…My boy chewed his up to pieces!
Our dog sleeps on any couch, the bed, four different places on the floor of the family room- but won’t sleep in a dog bed. She doesn’t know she’s a dog, and we don’t have the heart to tell her…..
Great post. My dog has finally learned to sleep in her own “bed”. Most mornings she is laying on the floor next to it under a blanket. She’s weird. Last night she was laying on a dirty pair of jeans I had left on the floor when I went to bed, but was under the blanket next to her bed this morning. Why she doesn’t sleep ON the dog bed with the blanket over her is beyond me. And she must have a blanket over her to sleep.
Good girl, Nikki. You deserve it.
Son2’s girlfriend gave Bandit a bed that had once been her cat’s. He loves it. I just hope he doesn’t think he’s a cat……maybe that’s why he likes playing with string?
